The final program is still being set, but there will be three key themes

  1. Diagnosis
  2. Research
  3. Gluten-Free Food

Speakers in the Diagnosis section include Dr. Markku Maki, Finnish gastroenterologist, researcher, and developer of the biocard home test for Celiac Disease. Practicing physicians here in Canada will also be describing the realities of diagnosing Celiac Disease in the doctor's office.

Three J. A. Campbell Research Award winners will speak on the results of their CCA–funded research and Marion Zarkadas of the CCA Professional Advisory Board and lead investigator on the "Living with the Gluten–Free Diet" study will give us an update on the research progress.

Dr. Mohsin Rashid will present his research on educating physicians about Celiac Disease using stories.

Sunday morning will include a presentation of the new CCA Logo Licensing programs for pure oats and GF food and a panel discussion on "GF food - what does it take to produce it and why is it so expensive?"

The exhibits area will be open for Conference Attendees from 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm Friday and from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Saturday. It will be open to the general public from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday May 30th.

Gluten-Free 101 Workshop – Separate Registration Required

A seminar for people new to the gluten free diet and for those who would like a refresher.

This optional seminar is a new venture for people who are recently diagnosed with celiac disease and those who have recently adopted a gluten-free diet. It is also offers a refresher course for people who have been on a gluten-free diet for several years, but have not kept up with the latest information on the diet and label reading. This seminar will be held on Friday May 29th 2009 in conjunction with the National Conference of the Canadian Celiac Association.

This seminar runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Breakfast starts at 8:00 am. Lunch and snacks are included. The day will consist four main sections:

  1. The Gluten Free Diet – presented by Shelley Case, author of Gluten–Free Diet: A comprehensive resource guide
  2. Label Reading – presented by Alexandra Anca, principal researcher of the CCA Acceptability of Food & Food Ingredients for the Gluten–Free Diet
  3. Gluten-Free Baking – presented by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt, authors of The 125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes , The Best Gluten-Free Family Cookbook and Complete Gluten-Free Cookbook
  4. Travelling and Eating Out on a Gluten-Free Diet – presented by Bob Levy of Bob & Ruth's Gluten–free Dining & Travel Club

Accommodation

Room rate guarantee ends April 20th. Please mention that you are coming to the celiac conference when you call to make your reservation.

The conference will be held at the Waterloo Inn and Conference Hotel, 475 King Street North, Waterloo, Ontario. Rooms can be booked directly with the hotel by calling (519) 884-0220 or 1-800-361-4708 or online using the booking code CCA26.

The conference rate is $143 per night, for single or double occupancy rooms. A third person sharing is an additional $15 per night. Children 16 and under sharing their parents accommodation are complimentary. These group rates are offered 3 days before and 3 days after the meeting date, subject to availability of rooms at the time of reservations.

Transportation

Driving

The Waterloo Inn is easily accessed from Highway 401 (Highway 8 Kitchener exit). Exit right to Highways 7 & 85. Stay on Highway 85 when Highway 7 exits. Take the King Street exit from Highway 85 and turn left (south) at the end of the ramp. The hotel is on your right but you must pass the Ford dealership before you come to the Service Road entrance. There is ample free parking at the hotel.

Flying

Waterloo is served by three airports.

  • Waterloo-Wellington Airport (YKF): (Westjet) from Calgary Bearskin from Ottawa
  • Hamilton Airport (YHM): Westjet from eastern and western Canada
  • Pearson Airport in Toronto (YYZ): Westjet and Air Canada from all parts of Canada and international flights.

Ground Transportation from Hamilton and Pearson Airports to the Waterloo Inn is provided by Airways Transit. Conference rates for transportation are being negotiated.

The Waterloo Inn runs a free shuttle to Waterloo-Wellington Airport for registered guests. Contact the hotel for more information.

Children's Program

A children's program for children 4 to 12 will be available Saturday and Sunday. The children will eat breakfast with their parents both days, and then will attend special activities while their parents attend the conference sessions. All foods and activities will be gluten-free.

National Workshop for Chapter Volunteers

Delegates from all 28 chapters will be meeting on Friday May 29th in Waterloo. Workshop details will be available in March 2009. For more details, contact Jim McCarthy, CCA Executive Director.

Associated Meetings

The CCA National Board will be meeting in Waterloo from May 26 – 31. 2009 in conjunction with the National Conference. If you would like more details on the meeting, contact Jim McCarthy, CCA Executive Director. The CCA Professional Advisory Board will also be meeting in Waterloo during the Conference.

Dietitian's Education Workshop

The CCA is offering a special workshop for Dietitans on Friday May 29, 2009. The speaker will be Shelley Case, RD, author of Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide and member of the CCA Professional Advisory Board. Download registration form.
